Chapter 12

We had a swift voyage home and during the voyage, I found Siggi a pair of thralls who might suit him. They were brother and sister. Edmund was the younger and had seen five summers. His sister, Margaret, was seven summers old. I knew that they would suit for their father, whom we had killed, had been the farmer whose field we had passed on the way to the village. I explained to Mary that the new owner would be a kind man and not a warrior. I told the three of them about Siggi and my stories made them smile.

Mary asked, “And am I to be with them?”

I shook my head, “Perhaps I did not make it clear, but you are to be my mother’s thrall. She is old but she can speak Saxon well and she is kind.”

“You do not wish me for your thrall?”

I shook my head, “I told you in Norton, I will see that no man harms you and that includes me.”

She shook her head, “You are a strange Viking.”

I nodded, “I know, and I do not even understand myself. I am young and I hope that I am granted time to discover just what I am like.” I paused, “I think my mother would like to be able to read. Perhaps you could teach her.”

“You have books? A Bible?”

I shook my head, “Just the parchments I fetched from your home.”

“She will find those dull for they are just a record my father was making of the history of the land people are calling Englaland.”

I shrugged, “Then when we raid other places, I will seek other scribbles on parchment.”

She nodded and stroked Margaret’s hair as she spoke, “You do not look it, but you are a fierce warrior. How could you kill a pony?”

“Its rider was trying to kill the hersir and I am sworn to guard him with my life.” I showed her the scar on my palm. “I took a blood oath.”

She looked beyond me and shook her head, “You had better go for the other men find this amusing and I would not be mocked by barbarians.”

I turned and saw Alf and Sweyn grinning. I became angry and strode down the drekar, “Have you nothing better to do than to spy on me?”

Alf laughed, “No, not really!”

Sweyn’s face became serious, “Enough, Alf, Sven is a shield brother. We do not laugh at a shield brother. Come, the two of you can help me make a song about the battle on the beach.”

Composing the song filled the time on the voyage home. As we neared the quay, I saw that everyone had gathered there. Now that we were a smaller clan our return was anticipated even more. My mother, however, was missing. I saw Egbert and Siggi as well as Agnetha but there was no sign of my mother. I hoped nothing had happened to her. I knew that she was old, she was the oldest woman in Agerhøne.

Sweyn was the first ashore followed by the three of us.
